Research Institutes Introduction Session (RIIS) is a series of interactive e-learning sessions which will introduce Asia’s leading scientific research institutions to young people to cultivate their interest in related fields, and to graduate students and prospective postdoctorals to learn about scientific research work in Asia. This will also provide a rare opportunity for participants to ask questions directly to the institution representatives.
Precipitation Measurement from Space and Its ApplicationsDate: 19/11/2012-26/11/2012
Precipitation is one of the major components of the Earth climate system. Precipitation has also a big impact as a major fresh water resource to the ecosystem and human activity. Thus, observation of precipitation distribution is crucial not only for understanding and predicting changes of precipitation under the current global climate change but also for human activities. Global or even locally, precipitation observation is, however, difficult, because it has large spatiotemporal variations.
The course is composed of a series of lectures and practice sessions which will introduce the basics of precipitation retrieval from space and current global precipitation maps and include the accuracy. Examples of global precipitation maps from space will be demonstrated. Practices are for learning skills to utilize the precipitation maps.

Introduction to River Basin Environment Assessment under Climate Change

The 21st IHP training course is focused on three major objectives:
(1) to acquire the latest knowledge on hydrological and environmental assessment under climate changes at river basin scale in the Asia-Pacific region,
(2) to make practice for selected topics on successful simulations to make use of the river basin environment assessment, and
(3) to discuss the possibility to apply the river basin environment assessment into some hydrological and environmental managements."One Day in Asia" Event was held on Thursday, November 1, 2012.
ODIA Event uses ICT networks and mobile technology to livestream broadcasts from UNESCO World Heritage sites located in 8 countries. The whole event went from noon in Nepal to night-time in Australia, wrapping up one whole day in Asia within the two-hour event, with the addition of morning in Greenwich, England.
The UN in Indonesia, ITB and INHERENT will host a unique online event. This event is expected to attract thousands of students and teachers from many universities across the country and from the wider Asia region.When? Tuesday, 9 October, 10 am - 12.00 pm (Jakarta time)

What? UNESCO's Regional Science Bureau Director – Hubert Gijzen will provide an overview of the main global challenges and the outlook for the Post-2015 Agenda for international cooperation and development. The keynote speaker will introduce the topic by providing answers to questions like: What are the main global challenges? Why is it urgent? What can be done about it?
In addition, four panelists will focus on the role of education, science and culture in building a sustainable society. The topics they will address include:
